Mr. Charles Louis Maddox

Charles Lewis Maddox, 89, passed away peacefully in his sleep on September 8, 2025 after a long life full of love, luck, and happiness. Charles’ luck began when he was born to Charlie and Ida Maddox on February 29, 1936. Charles was the oldest, and he would say funniest, of their three boys. He was always quick to crack a joke and never missed an opportunity to play a prank. Charles met and married the love of his life, Gladys Hubbard, at just 17 when she was 18. He never missed an opportunity to remind her that she married a younger man, but he conveniently omitted the fact that she was only his elder by one month. Charles and Gladys were lifelong best friends, frequently enjoying coffee together, playing cards, hosting family cookouts, and camping trips, even after their first attempt at marriage didn’t work out. Charles loved Gladys so much he married her twice! After years of living apart, he bragged he was finally able to trick her into marrying him again. Charles and Gladys were blessed with twins, Barbara and Debbie, who both had Charles’ sense of humor from the beginning, often giving Gladys a run for her money every chance they got. Their son, Steve, was born three years after the twins and was the best baby doll Charles and Gladys could have given to the girls. The kids always saw their dad as their hero chasing his next adventure. It wasn’t until they were adults that they realized their childhood years of chasing storms with their dad was actually his attempt to outrun the storms. Charles was preceded in death by his parents, his two younger brothers Don and Harold Maddox, his wife Gladys, and his son Steve. Charles is survived by his twins Barbara Berry (Hunter Richardson) and Debbie Wisdom (J.R. Mills), his grandchildren: Josh (Jennifer) Wisdom, William Wisdom, April McMillin (Murray), Jessica Hall (John Veasman), and Jerilyn Roberts, and his great-grandchildren Jonathan Riley McMillin, Charlie McMillin, Nicole Roberts, Carter Hall, Allison Hall, Colin Green, Kaci Roberts and Drew Zimmerman, his long-time friend and caregiver Jay Cox, as well as many friends and extended family. Visitation will be Tuesday, September 9, 2025, from 4:30-6:30 p.m. at Essex Funeral Home in DeWitt, Arkansas. Graveside services will be held Thursday, September 11, 2025, at 10:30 a.m. in St. Charles, Arkansas.
