Mr. Glenn Goodwin Stone

Glenn Goodwin Stone departed this earth on April 10, 2017. He was born in Carlisle, Arkansas, on September 17, 1925, to John Haskell and Blanche Goodwin Stone. When he was very young, his family moved to Olena, a farming community between Almyra and DeWitt. From a very young age he helped his dad work the farm and left only for a short time as a volunteer in the United States Army to serve his country during World War II. In 1945, he helped in the liberation of the concentration camp in Dachau, Germany, and was ultimately awarded, among other honors, two bronze stars for his service. Shortly after returning home, he saw a beautiful girl at the DeWitt skating rink on a Saturday night and announced to his friends that he was going to marry that girl some day. He and Jeannie Lou Simons were married on June 19, 1949, and would have celebrated 68 years of marriage this year. He was a Christian and loved God, but Jeannie was his sweetheart and it's possible that he lived to the ripe age of 91 just because he didn't want to leave her. He loved his farm almost as much as he loved his wife and his family. He knew every clod of dirt, every blade of grass on that farm, and until his last days could tell you the prices on the current grain futures. His greatest joy was to drive to the farm to oversee the crops and, in his later years, to make sure it was being kept up to his standards. He is survived by his wife, Jeannie, his daughters, Becky Eden (Tom McDonald) and Janet Hansen, both of Sherwood, Arkansas, his son, Gary Stone (Mary Ann) of Almyra, five grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren, a brother-in-law Webster Hillman of Almyra, and a large family of cousins, nieces, and nephews. He loved the yearly Goodwin family reunions because family was so important to him. He is predeceased by his parents, his brother, Paul Stone, his sisters Evelyn Stone and Betty Hillman, his son-in-law Gene Hansen (Sherwood), many army buddies, many friends, relatives and in-laws that he loved, and Old Dan, his horse. He gave his family years of priceless wisdom and humor, as well as an understanding of the importance of hard work and love of God and family. We are very thankful to have had this smart, funny, hard-working guy as our dad, husband, grandpa and great-grandpa. Visitation will be 6-8:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 12 t Essex Funeral Home. Services will be held at the First Baptist Church in Almyra, Arkansas, on Thursday, April 13, at 2:00 p.m. with burial following the service at the Almyra Cemetery.
