Mrs. Viola Baxter Cummings

Viola Baxter Cummings, 91, died May 8, 2015. She was born December 20, 1923, in Arkansas County near Hagler. She was the youngest daughter of James Franklin "Jim" Baxter and Polly Anna Watkins Baxter. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Dennis I. Cummings; two sons, Dennis Ray Cummings and Rodney I. Cummings; two sisters, Mary Moser and Marie Baxter, who died at age 10; one brother, Lyn B. Baxter; 10 nephews and one very special niece, a much loved and devoted care giver, Betty Ann Jones. She is survived by one grandson, Dennis Porter Cummings of Stuttgart, and also many nieces and nephews she though of as her very own. Although her immediate family was very small the Mary Moser family, Lyn Baxter family, Harley Cummings family, Dub Cummings family, and Flora Davis family were her family and she loved every one of them very much. Having worked in her church and in the public about all of her adult life, she had many co-workers and close friends who will remember her as "Ms. Viola, Aunt Vidie, or Grandma." Aunt Vidie was a little woman with a big heart full of love. She felt like there was something good in everyone, from neighbors sown the road who shared their garden vegetables to the banker up town who helped her when she needed it. She lived her entire life in and around DeWitt, ecept for two years she worked in Pine Bluff. She graduated from DeWitt High School during World War II and went to work at the Pine Bluff Arsenal. She came home when her shift changed and she had an extra day on the weekend. She was proud of the fact that she worked there two years and only missed 2 days of work. She retired from the Arkansas County Collectors office in 1987 after working there 19 years.
