Jack Essex

July 31, 1925 - October 31, 2011

Jack Walton Essex, 86, of Dewitt died Monday, October 31, 2011. He was born July 31st, 1925 in Angola, Indiana (Whippoorwill Ridge) to Don Walton and Cora Gladys Baker Essex. Jack was a life long funeral director and embalmer. He was the former owner and operator of Essex Funeral Home, Dewitt and Turpin Funeral home, Stuttgart. He served in the U. S. Army Corp. during World War II, was a member of First United Methodist Church where he served in various offices and was a member of the choir for many years. Mr. Essex was past president of Dewitt Hospital Board of Directors, member of Rotary and a Paul Harris Fellow, American Legion Post # 158 and former Dewitt City Councilman. He hunted ducks like nobody else for many years and took many young men on their first duck hunt. He also sang lead in Opportunes Barbershop Quartet. Survivors include his children and their spouses: Stewart and Sharon Essex of Coy, Jess and Donna Essex, Cooper and Connie Essex all of Dewitt, Sarah Essex of Denton, Texas; grandchildren and spouses: Kim and Bobby Lock, Ashley and Jeremy Lott, Tim and Tonya Essex, Laura Essex, Jake Essex, Nicholas Eichler and Justin Eichler; great-grandchildren; Tyler Lock, Christopher Lock, Alister Essex and Rachel Essex; Brothers: Frank Essex of Murfreesboro, Tennessee, Keith Essex of North Little Rock; Sisters: Jean Ann Farley of Big Spring, Texas, Emily Denton of Enid, Oklahoma and Joey Pedigo of Oklahoma city, Oklahoma. He was preceded in death by his parents, wives: Meredith Cooper Essex and Mary Thigpen Strain Essex, infant daughter: Loma Sue Essex, and granddaughter: Loma Essex. Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church, P. O. Box 527, Dewitt, Arkansas 72042 or the Dewitt Cemetery Association.
