July 14, 1921 - October 3, 2018
Vernie Mae Clark Shields Koen, 97, departed this life October 3, 2018. She was born July 14, 1921, in Arkansas County, Arkansas, to Nancy Crawford Clark and James Oscar Clark. After graduating St. Charles High School, she married her first love, Wilford “Bud” Shields. Bud and Vernie became parents to their only child, Barbara, and enjoyed a happy life until his death from a boating accident in 1957. Her happiness returned when she married her second love and best friend, Roy R. Koen, Jr., “Duly”, who became a wonderful second dad to Barbara and her husband Dwayne. Vernie and Duly became grandparents, lovingly spoiling Terri and Steve. Vernie continued that practice with great-grands, and great-great grands. When jokingly asked two days before her death who was her favorite between Terri and Steve, she smiled and quickly replied, “Both”. Vernie and Duly worked together as owners of Duly’s Auto Parts, and both served the Lord as active Christians with kindness and generosity. Vernie loved her Sunday School class at First Christian Church, where she faithfully attended until three weeks before her death. At the age of 95 “Miss Vernie” as she was known, moved to Crestpark Nursing home. She loved the opportunity to be hostess to her “elderly” neighbors, and was loved by both residents and staff. Vernie was preceded in death by her parents, husbands Bud and Duly, four siblings, and a grandson-in-law. She is survived by the “apple of her eye” daughter, Barbara, her “Golden Boy” son-in-law, Dwayne; two grandchildren, Terri Sharp (Chris), Steve Hornbeck (Cathy); great-grandchildren Holly Hurn (Paul), Tanner, Chris, McKenzi and Kayli Oxner, Kara Turner (Jonathan), Chloe Sharp, Noah and Abigail Hornbeck; and her childhood best friend of 96 years, Josie Padgett. Visitation with family and friends at 1:00 and funeral service at 2:00 Sunday, October 7, 2018, First Christian Church in DeWitt, with Brother Bob James officiating. Pallbearers Tanner Oxner, Chris Oxner, Paul Hurn, Noah Hornbeck, Brad Koen, and Senator Alan Clark. Memorials may be made to First Christian Church, P.O. Box 389, DeWitt, AR, 72042.
